Abstract
According to the literature, the pupillary light reflex is present immediately after birth. We were unable to find any reference to the time after birth that the first pupillary reflex response was noted. We measured the time from that of the delivery until the time of onset of a pupillary reflex to light.
Under constant conditions one hundred seventy Korean newborn were tested for the pupillary reflex at 5. minute intervals after birth. The study was done at the University Hospital of Ewha Women¢¥s University,
in Seoul, Korea. We found that the earliest time of onset of the pupillary response to light came mostly between 11-15 minutes after birth. There were no significant sex differences in the earliest time of appearance of this reflex (Table 3).
